Manus AI Review (2026): Strengths, Failures & the Meta Split
Manus is a general-purpose AI agent. You describe an outcome (“research 50 competitors and build a comparison deck”), and it plans the steps, opens a cloud computer, browses, writes code and hands back files. When it works, it does an afternoon of work in 20 minutes.
The short verdict: Manus is one of the strongest tools available for one-off deliverables: deep research, slide decks, and websites you can publish. The catch is reliability and cost. Users report loops, tasks marked “done” that aren’t, and credits burned on both, and the company spent 2026 being bought by Meta and then un-bought. What Manus actually does
Agent mode. The core product. Manus breaks your request into steps and works in a sandboxed virtual machine with a browser, file system and code runner. You can watch it work or leave. A newer Plan Mode makes it write out its approach for you to approve before it builds anything.
Wide Research. For jobs with many similar items, Manus’s docs say it “deploys hundreds of independent agents that work in parallel,” one per company, product or person, then merges the results into a table or report.
Slides. Manus researches a topic, writes the content, designs the slides and adds speaker notes. Since July 2026 it builds native .pptx files with editable charts instead of converting from a web format.
Website and app builder. Describe a site and Manus builds, hosts and deploys it, with a database, payments and custom domains. Hosting bills separately from credits once a site gets real traffic.
Browser control. Tasks run in a cloud browser by default. The Browser Operator extension lets Manus act inside your own Chrome or Edge using your existing logins, and the desktop app can read and edit files on your own computer.
Email and chat access. Mail Manus gives you a bot address you can forward or CC to start a task. In February 2026, Manus launched Manus Agents in Telegram, “the same Manus” with full tools inside a chat app. WhatsApp Business followed, but you can run one messaging agent connection at a time per workspace.
Connectors and schedules. Gmail, Google Calendar, Outlook, Notion, Slack, HubSpot, GitHub and others, plus scheduled tasks (20 on paid plans).
The Meta acquisition, and its reversal
This matters if you’re trusting Manus with your work.
- December 29, 2025: Manus announced it was joining Meta, two weeks after reporting $100M in ARR.
- April 27, 2026: China’s NDRC blocked the roughly $2 billion deal and ordered it withdrawn.
- May 2026: Meta and Manus completed their operational separation and stopped sharing data, according to earlier reports cited by TradingKey.
- August 11, 2026: Manus told users that data generated by some users on or after December 29, 2025 would be deleted on August 23 and 24 to comply with regulators. Affected users had until August 23 to back up and could restore from August 25. The Next Web noted that gave people 12 days of notice.
- August 2026: Caixin reported that Tencent, ZhenFund and HSG bought back Meta’s shares for $2 billion, with Tencent poised to become the largest shareholder.
- September 1, 2026: Manus resumed independent operations under its founding team.
What it means for privacy. Manus says the deletion was regulatory and “not the result of any security incident.” Your data is no longer inside Meta. But the episode showed that a change of owner can force the deletion of your work on short notice. Manus’s Team page says “We do not train models on your data” and that it is SOC 2 compliant. Its help center lists a data-training opt-out as a Team plan feature, so individual Pro users should check their settings rather than assume.
What users say
Manus has a 4.7-star average from more than 38,000 ratings on the App Store. The written reviews and Reddit threads are far more mixed, and many got sharper after the August migration.

Our read: failures cluster around fiddly, logged-in, multi-app admin (calendars, email, bookings) and long iterative sessions. That’s the work an agent has to repeat daily, which is where both the loops and the bills pile up.
Manus pricing in brief
Free gives 300 daily credits on Manus 1.6 Lite. Pro is $20, $40 or $200 a month for 4,000, 8,000 or 40,000 credits ($200, $400 or $2,000 billed annually). Team is $20 per seat with pooled credits. Manus’s own examples run 200 to 900 credits per task, unused monthly credits don’t roll over, and the system can’t estimate a task’s cost before it runs. Problems and limits
- Unpredictable cost. Manus’s help center says any cost estimate the agent gives you should be treated as a hallucination. Loops and fixes still bill.
- Narrow refunds. Credits come back only for verified platform bugs, not for output you’re unhappy with, and an AI agent reviews your claim first.
- Support. “I was passed between multiple support agents, often receiving only one reply every 24 hours.” (App Store review, September 2026)
- Migration fallout. Some users lost work in August. One App Store review from August 25 reads, in full: “I lost MONTHS worth of work!!!!!”
- Chat-app limits. The Telegram agent doesn’t show your credit balance, and deep research or deck requests there are rated “High” credit impact.

FAQ
Is Manus AI worth it? For occasional, well-scoped deliverables like research, slides and websites, yes, and the free tier is enough to test it. For daily admin, the credit burn and reliability complaints make it a poor fit. An assistant like Carly is built for that recurring work.
Is Manus still owned by Meta? No. China blocked the deal in April 2026, and Manus resumed independent operations on September 1, 2026, led by its founders. Caixin reports Tencent is set to become its largest shareholder.
